Take A Trip To The The Grand Train Station In Maputo

Take a trip to the the Grand Train Station in Maputo
browse (1 / 3)

Downtown Maputo keeps beat with a thriving culture and a pulsating, vibrant atmosphere with its many street-side café’s and bustling marketplaces. Yet, the city still bears the scars of many long, hard-fought years of struggle for independence. In the midst of the colourful Jacaranda and Palm trees, one of the most impressive colonial structures is the Grand Train Station of Maputo.

This structure, like the Iron House in Maputo, is a testament to the grand colonial times that haunt Mozambique. Reminiscences of an age gone by still linger in the streets and some of the buildings. The impressive Grand Train Station of Maputo is graced with white marble pillars and a massive dome that presides over it. A few steam trains that are no longer in operation grace the tracks, transporting visitors on a fantastical journey to the time when Maputo thrived with colonial trade, and yet bore the brunt of the terrible rule of colonialism.

Trains still run between Johannesburg and Maputo. A restaurant and bar inside the train station is worth a visit to try out Laurentina, a light Mozambican beer, while hearing the tale of the lost “Kruger Millions”, the legend that tells of hidden South African gold brought to Maputo by Paul Kruger, the Boer leader, after he fled from the British army in the wake of the South African War in the late 19th Century. Other wonderful, hidden treasures await tourists that visit Mozambique, such as diving the thriving coral reefs at Ponto do Ouro, days spent lounging on soft, white beaches, or exploring vast, unspoiled game reserves.
