Bird Watching In The Delicate Ecosystem

The vibrant and dynamic culture of Mozambique has an activity for every traveler from the laid back sun worshiper to the avid explorer. Among these one can also count the bird watcher. Mozambique is filled with spectrums of colour, whether it is above or below the water and bird watching in its delicate ecosystem can really be rewarding. While Mozambique was at one point virtually off limits to bird watchers due to civil unrest, disease as well as a poor infrastructure, it has once again become a popular spot to explore. This is the home of expansive wetlands and mysterious mangrove forests which are in danger of dying out at the hands of man. In this setting, there are over 690 species to be seen. It is certainly no wonder that Mozambique is a bird watching paradise.

The Bazaruto Archipelago is the perfect destination to watch for migrant birds and the shores are laden with plovers, sandpipers and other regular waders. Praia do Sol is also a wonderland in which bird watching is rewarding at almost any time of the day. It is, however, a definite must to take early morning walks on the lagoon to which you may just be rewarded with the sight of the Palm Nut Vulture gliding effortlessly over the lagoon. The Maputo Elephant Reserve, which is located on the ocean, is also a rather popular spot for birders and there are plenty birding tours on which one can embark in and around Mozambique.

No matter whether you are a bird watching extremist or just a casual onlooker taking note of the extensive variety of birds, Mozambique will astound you with the beauty of her birdlife.
