Be Inspired At The National Art Musuem

Be inspired at The National Art Musuem

The tale of Mozambique’s jaded history is one of the most fascinating on the African continent. From its early beginnings as a port of call for Chinese and Persian traders, through the days of Portuguese colonialism, the struggle for independence and the civil war that ripped through the country, Mozambique is a land drenched in history. Yet, its beautiful white beaches, untouched reserves and ancient buildings also make it one of the most fascinating places in the world to visit.

The bustling streets of Maputo spill over with laughter, ringing out with the shouts of street vendors. Fruits, nuts and hand-crafted items are sold in the busy market near the city centre. All that Mozambique has to offer is enshrined in the National Art Museum in Maputo, located in the cosmopolitan Bairro Central region in Maputo.

This museum houses the contemporary art of some of Mozambique’s finest artists. The magical realism of a society torn apart by violence and shattered illusions is manifested in the contemporary works. Within the museum, browse various sculptures, paintings, drawings, print and mixed mediums. The notable and remarkable styles of Shetani and Ujamaa are infused in the works. The works of a few famous contemporary artists housed in the museum include those of Bertina Lopes, Chichorro, Chissano, Estavao Mucavele, Celestino Tomas, Macamo, Malangatana, Nguib, Samate and Victor Sousa. A trip to the National Art Musuem also gives you a glimpse into the mechanics of artwork, with a workshop where visitors can watch Mozambican artists at work.
