HOW TO GET TO POMENE:
By Road:
From Maputo take the EN1 north, a tarred road with fuel approximately every 250 km. Pomene Bay Lodge is 605km north of Maputo. The road is tarred all the way to the Pomene turn off, 10km out of Massinga. Turn right, onto a dirt road, at the Pomene sign and follow the last 55 km's which is signposted and takes you through a small village, Rio das Pedras, en route to the camp. The last 8 kilometers is thick soft sand where you will need to deflate your tyres and engage 4x4.
FUEL STOPS:
Most travellers fill up in Maputo, Xai-Xai, Maxixe and Massinga. No fuel is available for sale at the Lodge so Massinga is your nearest fuel to the lodge.
Unleaded fuel is available in Maputo, Xai-Xai and sometimes in Massinga. If you require unleaded you should carry some with you to ensure you get to the next fuel station.
Many service stations do not provide air for tyres. Air is readily available in all small towns and you will pay approx. 10,000 meticais per tyre to fill. Ask any local for air and he will point you to some enterprising fellow who has a small generator and compressor at the side of the road.
By Air and Road Transfer:
Flights are available every Monday and Friday between Johannesburg International via Maputo to Inhambane, Mozambique. Spend the night at Barra Lodge and do the 3 hour transfer to Pomene Lodge the following day. Road transfers are available on request.
