Scuba diving in Mozambique
The southern tip of Mozambique has emerged as the new diving mecca. Ponta d'Ouro is the Point of Gold, and it is every bit as lovely as its name suggests. Beautiful sandy beaches stretch as far as the eye can see and a huge bay allows safe swimming and easy launching. The camp is a stone's throw away from the beach and the untamed surroundings will refresh your soul from the frenetic pace of the city.
DIVING
The abundant fish life in Mozambique makes the diving here very exciting. Regular sightings of giant morays, rays and massive potato bass contrast with a myriad of tiny nudibranchs, shy gobies and damselfish. The reefs are smaller and further apart, but each one is unique.
Doodles: an all time 18m favourite because of the big shoals of baitfish, resident morays and potato bass. Lots of raggy scorpion fish and octopus as well.
- Checkers is just up the street and has an amazing red anemone at 19m .
- Crèche is the perfect place for juvenile fish and new divers at 12m
- Steps is a long thin reef close to shore and popular for unusual things like cuttlefish
- Maverick - a small reef alone at 26m, it has an unbelievable amount of activity and abundant morays.
- Kev's Ledge has a maximum depth of 24m, known for its stunning corals.
- Bass City is the most famous site in Mozambique. Clouds of sweepers hang over the 3 coral clusters, and gigantic potato bass cruise around to greet the divers at 21m. Plentiful devil fire fish and geometric morays.
- 3 Sisters and Aquarium at 28m are favourites with the photographers.
- Texas - a vast shallow reef with lovely coral formations.
- Pinnacles holds the adrenalin prize. The pinnacle is at 36m, but depths exceed 45m at some parts. Often done as a blue-water multilevel dive, divers have seen hammerheads, zambezis, devil rays and barracuda here.
- Ponta Ledge or Lego is also a deep dive and when the viz is good this is out of this world.
- There are more good reefs like Anchor, Turtle Creek, Breadloaf, Shallow Malongane, Fingers and Steve's. Each one has something special so you can do a different dive on every trip to Mozambique
WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO DO?
Not much! Mozambique is really relaxing ... you can take long walks on the beach, play Jenga or Backgammon, read, and soak up the sun. Those with lots of energy can take their jet-ski's to play in the waves, or do a bit of surfing off the point. Sundowners on Crèche Hill while watching the 4x4's battle it out in the sandpit is a splendid memory to take home with you. This is a good place to pick up your cell phone messages.
